Atypical day in the field

Working with the refugee communities is quite an exciting but at the same times challenging activity. On a typical day, our team meet in the morning for a brief on what they are to accomplish and get to the farmer’s demonstration sites. At the site, we discuss with the farmers what we had trained on the previous day, giving them opportunities to ask questions and address any concerns they have. Then, a new topic is introduced and learning ta kes place practically in the garden. Same day, if time allows, we visit farmers’ own fields to see how they are adopting the knowledge learnt and we give them technical support on the spot. A normal day ends with a review of what has been done, farmers asking questions, and then the team meet to make a plan for the next day. YICE boasts of an amazing team with both the practical and soft skills of managing refugee farmers. Recently, the team has undergone refresher training in Permaculture Design Course, communication skills and safe guarding. It is always fulfilling to hear feedback from the beneficiaries that the team is technical and handles them with respect and care.
